Being based in Cornwall we certainly get our fair share of unseasonal weather and this weekend was not exception. With another yellow warning for wind in force it certainly was a blustery weekend and I unfortunately took the decision to pack my teak garden furniture away for the winter. Whenever I do this job, it always makes me feel like I’m saying goodbye to summer, but to ensure your garden furniture is in its best possible place ready for when the weather improves in 2026, there are a few simple things you can do to ensure it is kept in tip top condition.
I am very lucky in having a couple of outside sheds that I can store my garden furniture in, which helps to protect it from the elements through those long dark and cold winter months. However, I appreciate that not everyone has this luxury. But even if you do have a place to store your outdoor teak furniture, there are a few simple things can help to maintain it through the winter and to also prolong its life span.
Whether you have some of our stunning teak garden furniture or you have a different type of outdoor furniture, just shoving it away in the corner of a shed or just throwing a tarpaulin over the top will be fine for a short period of time, but if you want to get the best possible life out of your outdoor furniture a little bit of care and TLC will certainly pay off in the long run.
Firstly, check over your teak garden furniture and make sure there is no obvious damage that can be dealt with now, rather than pulling your furniture out next year just before you need it to find one of the arms has fallen off in your hand! A simple visual check over will ensure any issues are found and dealt with. Some of our teak furniture, like other styles and materials, may have bolts or screws holding certain parts together. At this point it is easy to grab an allen key, screwdriver or spanner and just simply ensure everything is nice and tight and ready for next year.
Once this has been done it is always worth making sure any dirt, grime or stains are dealt with to make sure they firstly do not stain but also to ensure they do not cause any bigger issues come next spring. For our teak garden furniture, a simple solution of soapy water and a cloth can be used to remove any unwanted deposits there may be on the wood, a scrubbing brush can be used but please ensure it is used with the direction of the grain and also not scrubbed too aggressively to avoid any undue damage. Specialist cleaners for different types of wood are available for any really stubborn marks and stains, but always ensure if these are used that the manufacturer guidelines are followed. Leaving your furniture to dry naturally will also help, but that may be tricky this time of year as the weather becomes more unpredictable.
As I said previously not everyone is lucky enough to have plenty of under cover space to store outdoor furniture. If this is the case then specialist furniture covers can be obtained to cover your teak garden furniture. When it comes to covering our teak garden furniture just ensure the furniture is dry before covering and also obtain a breathable furniture cover. Without a breathable cover, there will not be any air movement around the furniture which can lead to mould forming on the wood surface. Please always ensure a breathable cover is used on our teak furniture, otherwise this can leave marks and affect the furniture. Once protected, ensure the cover is secure and not flapping around which may cause damage to the furniture.
With a few simple steps it can be very easy to help keep your outdoor furniture in the best condition possible. An outdoor furniture purchase can be quite costly. Teak garden furniture can have a very long life. Taking a bit of time and care to look after it when you can will certainly pay dividends in years to come.
